About this deal

I am anxious, though, that something of this contempt spills over and starts to marinate the prose to its own detriment; certainly, the narrators’ constantly withering assessments of other characters threaten to swamp the reading experience.

It had been my first long-term relationship after my divorce and I felt like such a failure when it ended – staring down the barrel of my 40s, single, divorced and without the children I longed for. Lastly, of course, gradually we learn what actually happened on the night of the party and of the consequences of those events. Although I have to say I found the ending not very strong as compared to the rest of the story, but befitting. The danger of the mind to trick one into thinking all the bad things we imagine are facts when in truth, they are just thoughts which are, in turn, a product of our experience. Any "Author Information" displayed below reflects the author's biography at the time this particular book was published.During the pandemic, I think so many people underwent a reassessment of friendship and what it means to them. Her fourth novel, The Party is out in July 2017, published by 4th Estate in the UK, Little Brown in America, Belfond in France and Dumont in Germany.

And that you shouldn't look at a failure as something terrible, it just is what it is and you shouldn't look at success as something great, it just is what it is. The real problem with this novel of obsession, friendship, power and privilege is that it’s all been done before, and it all felt very derivative.

While Lucy is far more perceptive than Martin, who is desperate to remain on good terms with Ben, she goes through the charade for her husband. Yes, they have some similar themes: Popularity vs Outcast, Old money vs disadvantaged poor, privilege, unrequited love, identity, and sociopaths.
