It was not but a few days later that Sullivan put Bill Martel’s family address into his GPS and found that the two men lived only a few miles apart. Interesting note to myself — this is the second recent book I’ve read with visions- destinations in *Montana*…. Sullivan tells me, “It was going to be these witnesses that would radiate a unique soul to the story. But the story was compelling, and even with the simplistic writing, it conveyed a whole array of emotions from happiness to hatred and everything in between.

Remembering that day and still clinging to the side of the wagon, Emil gasped at the way his heart ached. I realise that the author had to create/interpret parts of the family's story but it all felt fairly authentic.Sullivan continues, telling me that he had been presenting his story Beneath a Scarlet Sky at a local Rotary Club meeting and people were telling him that he was never going to find another story like this in his lifetime. Now, Adeline gazed at him, still in turmoil over the decision, but feeling what she always did about Emil: his moodiness and quietness aside, he was not only a good man, he was a tested man, a fighter, and a survivor. After the publication of BENEATH A SCARLET SKY in 2017, Mark started to receive letters from readers, telling him stories of their loved ones.

I swear there is a solid 5 minute part where the parents are discussing on whether or not their child should pee out of the wagon. The rolling hills in the southern part of the Corridor become more rugged in the northern part of the corridor. They’d sat side by side in the shade of the thresher, looking out over the golden hills of grain, and ate fresh bread with dried sausage and drank cold tea. There were more German trucks and crippled armored vehicles on the road now and dozens of covered wagons and horses, all heading west, all trying to outrun Joseph Stalin’s armies, which were on the attack again. The Last Green Valley lived up to my hopes which were built from Beneath A Scarlett Sky; a book I read several years ago and still heartily recommend. She rounded the house and saw Emil hunched over, holding on to the wagon with one hand, gasping, his eyes closed, his features twisted with pain as his free hand clawed at his chest.

For a time, she had walked around looking over both shoulders for fear wolves would burst from the forest and hunt her. The last chapter was interesting though - how the family fared in the US, and how the two little boys the book opened with are doing today. Una historia dura, de supervivencia, que merece mucho ser leída, y quizá nos demos cuenta, de que lo que ocurrió en el pasado y que pensamos que no puede volver a ocurrir.

This book is based on a part of history I wasn’t aware of, how the Germans tried to fill their cities with German families who had moved years ago to the Ukraine. The Last Green Valley is also based on real people, again the history of a family now living in Montana. Not long after, we take a quick detour up a winding road into Brooklyn, and feel a sense of anticipation as The Golden Lamb Buttery looms into view. My husband and I have great-grandparents who were Germans living in Russia, so I was interested in the subject matter of this novel.
