About this deal

A nice chunky boost who cuts the bad, bad bass frequencies and turns my Gibson SGs into real metal machines! The company goes as far as saying: "When you plug into the Bonsai, you're playing through the exact same circuitry as the original pedals.

A final note to “tech” guys that like to fool around with electronics: Because the OD808 incorporates an SDPT footswitch, converting it to true-bypass using a Fulltone 3DPT switch may be of interest to you. Based on the late '70s original, the TS808 brings smooth, sweet and sophisticated overdrive to the party –although it'll set you back the best part of 200 bucks. I tried to gain more information on what these points may have been, but unfortunately no such material exists on chips made 20 years ago. It’s not quite as high-brow as some of the more expensive options on this list, but if sophisticated overdrive is what you want, then you probably won’t get it from a Tube Screamer. Even at its highest gain settings, the naturally dark voicing of my Les Paul rang through loud and clear with just a trace of extra edge in the high end—which was easily remedied by a quick adjustment to the pedal’s tone control or the amp’s treble knob.As he stated, a production chip with a given date code that is even three years old is considered “very old” and is usually destroyed by that time if it is in a supply warehouse somewhere.

I would suggest staying with what you've got and maybe invest in an MXR 10-band EQ or something like that if you don't already have one. So, putting this buffered Maxon OD808 into the signal path has made no difference whatsoever that I can detect. As passionate guitar enthusiasts, we understand the importance of achieving the right sound and tone, so we draw on our knowledge gained from using these products in live performances, studio recordings, and rehearsals to identify the best products for our guides. if you want it to TB something without modding the case, get it, if you get it because you want to improve your buffered tone, don't.Again overall, we’re talking about subtle differences and both are excellent units in their own right. The Fat toggle adds a custom MOSFET clipping stage, delivering an overdriven tone reminiscent of high-end boutique amps.

Never one to rest on their laurels, Maxon has tweaked the current version ever so slightly to reduce noise level while retaining the legendary “808” tone (see Tech Talk below). The pedal is a fantastic tool for tightening the low end of a driven amplifier and adding top-end presence without excessively coloring the tone. Each channel has its separate Level, Gain and Tone knobs, with also a Normal and Fat toggle for a bassier voice. If you want something tonally different to the Ibanez model, then you won’t really find it here – but if you’re someone who enjoys having something different on your ‘board to everyone else, then the Maxon could be the one for you. if you don't like ts-style ods, then get a different style of overdrive (timmy/blues driver/bluesbreaker/klon or something like that).

The Tube Screamer circuit can definitely do gain at both ends of the scale, but pedals such as the JHS Bonsai and Hudson Sidecar excel in the high-gain arena.

It includes controls for Level, Tone and Gain and a Juiced mode that boosts the signal with a flick of the switch. If having a pedal as an investment is pushing it too far, then the regular, off-the-shelf Ibanez TS808 will satiate all your Ibanez Tube Screamer needs. When Ibanez reissued its TS-9 Tube Screamer in 1996 (circuit still manufactured by Maxon), some wondered why they didn’t choose to reissue its TS-808 model instead. Output and midrange were balanced out and the gain was bumped up for a sweeter, more natural sound even at higher settings. In addition, a whole family tree of pedals descended from it make up a huge chunk of the pedal market. When I'm on the clean channel, using this pedal gives me a more classic Stevie Ray -esque driven tone.
