About this deal

Hellraiser III was always the most problematic of the previous release for several reasons – the first was its flattened contrast ratio…shadows were murky thanks to a greying out of blacks in a lot of scenes and this has been nicely addressed with the new colour grading.

Newly uncovered workprint version of the film, providing a fascinating insight into how it changed during post production – This workprint opens with the following information: “The following version of Hellraiser: Bloodline is a workprint with temporary music and sound effects. Unboxing Hellraiser – A brand new 22 minute video essay exclusive to this release by Alexandra Benedict that discusses the iconic Hellraiser box, the Lament Configuration. This version, which has a different plot structure and some alternate material compared to the final ‘Alan Smithee’ cut, is presented from a timecode VHS, the best material available for this release. Following the destructive finale of the previous film, Kirsty (Ashley Laurence) awakes at The Channard Institute, a mental health facility that doesn’t always have its patients’ best interests at heart.

One only has to look at Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, Glen Morgan’s underrated Black Christmas remake or Rob Zombie’s Halloween II as examples of the grubby fingers of the Weinstein’s ruining a filmmaker’s original and intended vision for a film. The film delves into hell, taking the audience and characters there, and shows us that the Cenobites were once humans themselves; a fact that would play heavily into subsequent movies. And some of that does perhaps come through in a film that is wonderfully made, yet contains some flaws. He gives love to Young’s score, some of the troubles with certain practical effects, his methods of directing actors and more. The visuals that accompany that last act are truly stunning, especially in these new UHD transfers that deliver an experience unlike any of the other films in the franchise. With Barker having no involvement on the film, director Anthony Hickox takes it in a very different direction.

Archival on-set interview with cast and crew – An archival 5 minute promotional piece with cast and crew interviews from Clive Barker, Ashley Laurence, Clare Higgins, Imogen Boorman and Kenneth Cranham. She regales her story to the Institutes Head (Kenneth Cranham), unbeknownst to her that he has long been fascinated with the exploration of pleasure, pain and its impact on the mind. Digging into some of them, the two documentaries on the Hellbound disc are possibly the best two here, the first being a loose but fun deep dive into the film by a couple of friends which sounds like the kind of conversation you wish you had down your local, whilst the second fully appreciates the work that composer Young brings to the whole series. Great to see hellraiser get a 4K transfer also great to see bloodlines in the set (granted not the best of the series but I enjoyed it) boxset looks lovely though would have liked them in individual cases in the boxset. It arrived with a big hole on one side and impressions on the outer box, happily the sturdy inner box were in mint condition.
