NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR, BOOKPAGE, AND SHELF AWARENESS• “Paula McLain is considered the new star of historical fiction, and for good reason. The writing, which flowed richly at the start, degenerated into passages similar to those Hollywood quasi-intellectual quotes of the "if you build it they will come" variety. Much of the novel features her early life and loves; less focus is put on her flying acommplishments. Nevertheless, she continues to experience a huge amount of professional success as a racehorse trainer.

Circling the Sun,’ Tale of Female Aviator Beryl Markham ‘Circling the Sun,’ Tale of Female Aviator Beryl Markham

Circling The Sun is narrated by Beryl and she tells her life story, moving from her youth in colonial Kenya to her eventual fame as the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. Beryl’s descriptions of her African childhood, colonial Kenya in all its seasons, and her extraordinary adventures fairly leap off the page—but more striking to me is the spirit behind the words. The luscious writing of this novel will transport you to the dry rolling hills of Kenya and quench your thirst after a long drought. Perhaps those interested in her eventful life would do better to read her memoir, West with the Night, which won Hemingway's praise, instead of this rosy-coloured "oh my Africa!Beryl is just a wonderfully unique character, having grown up on her father's farm in Kenya after her mother decided to take herself back to England.

Markham's true life was incredibly adventurous, and it's easy for readers to identify with this woman who refused to be pigeonholed by her gender. Some of that can be chalked up to her hands-off upbringing and her parents’ negligence, but sometimes we just need to learn from our mistakes. Many questionable decisions and lifestyles, but at least none of the characters are cookie-cutter perfect or predictable. She captured the emotions and thoughts of a scared young girl, a gutsy young woman, and a pioneering survivor of a challenging life. As a child, she was a tomboy, shunning Edwardian ribbons and bows, preferring to hunt with the local tribe, and even surviving a lion attack. This makes a great companion read with Beryl Markham’s memoir West with the Night, which is about growing up on a horse farm in colonial Kenya in the early 20th century. We’re all of us afraid of many things, but if you make yourself smaller or let your fear confine you, then you really aren’t your own person at all—are you? In McLain’s confident hands, Markham crackles to life, and we readers truly understand what made a woman so far ahead of her time believe she had the power to soar.

Oh, you absolutely should,” she insisted, “if only so that you can come home and really see it for what it is. At sixteen, she is forced to start making decisions for herself as her father is moving south to Cape Town. Numerous instruments there may be, but each one is given space to breathe, with not a hint of conflict or confusion as vintage synth sounds blend with shimmering harp notes and vibraphone whilst at the same time accommodating horn riffage, undulating flute patterns and esoteric keyboards, all underscored by a solid-sounding upright bass and retro jazz drum kit.Who knows if it's an accurate depiction, but Beryl felt real, multidimensional and -- although struggling against the norms -- grounded in her historical context. She becomes the charge of her native neighbors who readily teach her their customs and train her to be a warrior. Yet, Circling the Sun is all about white colonialists and their self-enclosed world on their plantations in the East African Protectorate, where the natives are hardly more than an exotic backdrop for the adventures and love affairs of a British floozy.
