About this deal

Hosted by Michael Aspel, each contestant has two minutes to get their teammates to guess their mime - otherwise it's thrown open to the other team for a bonus point! Likewise, there's a new symbol for the word "a" which seems OK for that word but has been purloined to use for ANY "A" word. After that, there was the glorious theme tune of the Parky version, composed by Thames TV's Musical Director Alan Braden.

Anna Dawson apparently had no idea what a “syllable” is (she thought “Apocalypse” had ten of them, presumably thinking a syllable is a letter). It actually turned out to be a favourite episode overall, with Chris Biggins's turns including The Ideal Gnome Exhibition and Rumpelstiltskin. Looking at it though the prism of the early 21st Century, certainly most - if not all - of them turned out to be five minute wonders.Una’s screen father also appeared, and after Una’s turn Warren Mitchell improvised an Alf Garnett line threatening to put her over his knee if she wiggled her bottom like that again. Best of all is the wonderful moment where Ian Ogilvy falls off his chair laughing at Roy's two-fingered gesture immediately followed by signalling something very small. Not least Kenny Everett's legendary interpretation of Puck Of Pook's Hill at around 18:50 in this vid. For the first few series, the set seems to be almost entirely made of brown carpet, which was probably rather stylish in the late-1970s and early 1980s. In the first two series, the teams would have three celebrities and a member of the public playing the game. Once one begins to dive into this massive set compiled by Network, known for their releases of the similar situated Indoor League, the reasons for the release become clearer.

This includes, without limitation, direct loss, loss of business or profits (whether or not the loss of such profits was foreseeable, arose in the normal course of things or you have advised this Company of the possibility of such potential loss), damage caused to your computer, computer software, systems and programs and the data thereon or any other direct or indirect, consequential and incidental damages. The more modern BBC re-make with Tim Clark tried to introduce a lateral thinking puzzle (which he could "give clues to") but it didn't really fit in with the rest of the show. On one infamous edition of the programme, the male non-celebrity was handed the title he had to mime on a card by host Michael Aspel, but, rather than read the title, he read the wrong side of the card, on which his name was printed.

And David Jason could not seem to stand anyone else being in the spotlight, standing up frequently, quipping directly at the audience and even heckling the girls' team during their turns (I can't imagine his episode being repeated anyway given his knitted jumper was emblazoned with a huge golliwog). Jim Davidson looked set to do the same, but I began warming to him when he poked fun at TV-am's Anne Diamond's early starts ("You gotta be up in a minute in't ya? The host shows whichever sucker whose turn it is the name of a book, play, TV show, movie, song, person or brand of soup upon which said sucker pulls a face. If you’re just discovering this show (like me), then you have a long journey ahead of you…and it’s a fun one.

Fortunately, the next pair of episodes I watched featured a more reassuring lineup: Richard O'Sullivan, Tom O'Connor and Ray Alan vs. I rarely watch any kind of TV during the daytime, so it's a heady indulgence, and one I look forward to on those days I'm around the house. Incidentally, the Gascoine/Goddard/Sewell/Nedwell episode ended with the male member of the public on the panel - a fashion designer named Leslie Dean - being given The Poseidon Adventure, but giving a rather bizarre mime by pointing at himself, indicating it was two words and doing the “name” head touching thing. And although it’s hard to imagine anybody sitting through an entire disc in one go (it does get a wee bit repetitive after a while), playing along with the game can be fun, despite the fact that some of the titles are of long-forgotten songs or TV shows. I was always amazed at the quality of the guests they had on the show, some of the biggest names in entertainment from the period seemed to make appearances.I certainly used to enjoy him in GUAC back in 1988 when these episodes were first airing, and so I was looking forward to his era very much. Secondly, the teams now alternate between getting the first go, whereas previously the women always went first.
